This small Compigné medallion depicts an urban view. It is executed in gouache and accented with gold on stamped tin sheets. It shows the square of Port-Vendres. At its center stands an obelisk crowned with a globe and a fleur-de-lys. The base of the monument bears the inscription “À La Gloire de Louis XVI [To the Glory of Louis XVI]”. It is enclosed by a fence with heraldic shields set at each corner. In the background stands a building reminiscent of an ancient temple with a triangular pediment and four rows of columns. Several figures animate the square. Behind them, a line of trees precedes a chain of mountains. In the painting, the entire composition was stamped and then entirely heightened with gold. The sky is executed in gouache. The composition is surrounded by a beaded frieze and set in a gilt- bronze frame, itself mounted within a rectangular surround covered in red velvet.
